Mother Katie Elizabeth Watkins Howell died 26 October in Raleigh NC at the age of 65.  Part of her life is covered in this post here.

Garland was living with Lena at 601 Graydon Avenue apartment B3, Norfolk VA.  He apparently works as a "dept city clk" (Department of the City Clerk? or Deputy City Clerk?) City Police Court II.

Garland died 12 March 1961 when he was only 46 years old, living in Alexandria, Fairfax VA.

He was buried in Selma, Johnston County NC at the Parrish Memorial Cemetery, Johnston County NC.  He had three children and at least seven grandchildren.  Interesting to note that he is back at 376 West Lee Street in Alexandria Virginia and is working as a Fuel Oil Distributor.  He apparently died at home of a heart attack and cardiovascular disease.  Because it happened suddenly and at such a young age, it was possibly what is commonly called the Widow-maker.    

There are two Find a Grave memorials.  The first has photos of the grave, and is owned by Georgia  Bristol who has herself passed away.  The citation for this memorial is as follows

1954 has no Garland Howell in the directory, nor any West Lee.  No Ranch.  No Ranger's Market.

1956 age 42

Garland works as the manager of Ranch Ice Cream and Ranger's Market.  He hired at least two family members to run his delivery trucks, see the photos below.  And, no, this wasn't ice cream made with Ranch Dressing!  That wasn't even a thing at that time.  I can't find anything on Google about this ice cream business, nor of Ranger's Market.

He lived at 376 West Lee, Alexandria Virginia, according to the City Directory.  However, when I try to Google the address I only get North and South Lee streets.  There is no West Lee.  Well, that was frustrating!  Was the directory wrong?  Did this street get a name makover?

Manager Ranch Ice Cream and Ranger's Market.  Home 376 West Lee, and the address for both businesses is 3000 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria.  But, when I look for that address now, I finally found it -- in the middle of a river!  This is crazy!  On a good note, it isn't too far from where Katie Howell lived in 1952.

Garland lived with  Lena E, his wife on 376 West Lee NA, Alexandria Virginia, and works for Ranger's Market.  Again with the West Lee address which I cannot find.  I searched for Ranger's Market, and the closest I get is an Old Town Farmer's Market -- nope, don't think that has anything to do with it.

Garland lived with wife Lena on 376 West Lee G, Alexandria Virginia.  Again, same address on West Lee, with both Garland AND Lena listed on separate lines.  The black circle shows Garland at Ranger's Market -- one assumes he is still manager.  The Red circle is Lena, who is the cashier at Ranger's Market.

So, I searched this particular directory to see if I could find West Lee.  Guess what?  There actually was a West Lee Street.  This directory had a street by street enumeration of residents, so here it is, including the cross streets.  The red circles are in two columns, and the red arrow points to Garland's name. The listing is as follows:  Lee West (Groveton) -- from 2500 Richmond hwy west, 1 north of Collard.  I searched for Lee and Richmond Hwy, and found Janna Lee road, but no house number 376.  I searched for Collard and Lee and got no intersection there.  I am lost as to what that road may be now.
