1910  Census

from Ancestry.com
Katie's family starts on line 54.  Her father is more formally listed as Henry B. Watkins, age 46, renting the farm.  He can read but is not able to write.  Ida is 34, has had a total of 8 children born, so far, with only 6 still living.  She is able to both read and write.

Jasper works on the farm and attends school.  Katie is 14 years old, also works on the farm and attends school.  Lelia, age 10, is also working on the farm, as well as attends school.  The other children, Marty age 8, Frank age 3, Louise age 4/12 are also listed.

A couple of points.
1 -- Henry Blake Watkins, went by the name of Blake.  Sometimes the census is indexed as WADkins because the handwriting may seem like this.  He couldn't write, but he could read.
2 -- it looks like two children died in the last 10 years.
3 -- It is unusual for a girl of 14 to have an occupation listed like Katie does.

Marriage with Fristus Haywood Howell, Johnston NC.  I would love to have a photo of their wedding.  I wonder how they met?  Did they live close by?  Did they go to the same church?  Meet in the General Goods Mercantile?

The American entrance into the First World War was a relief to the exhausted Allies.  Troops were inspected by foreign officers and trained by their British and French comrades in the trenches.

Katie, age 5, is shown living with the family starting at line 40.  Her father, here listed as "Blake" rents their farm, her mother is listed as "Ida."

My thoughts -- This is secondary proof that Katie was born in North Carolina.  Katie is the second child born.  I wonder what information is included on the farm schedule?  I've never seen one, but it should be somewhere, right?    It looks like mother Ida was about 16 years old when she married Blake, having her first child right away.  Then, I have to admit I was a little confused by the names of the last two girls.  It must have been confusing to distinguish between Lillie and Lila May.

Again, we don't have primary sources of birth for Katie Watkins.  So we have to rely on census records and other secondary and tertiary sources.  She was the second child of about 11 children born to Henry and Martha Warrick Watkins.

Katie Elizabeth Watkins was born, 17 December 1894 in Johnston North Carolina.  Her death certificate shows her born in South Carolina, but that is probably an error on the part of the informant.  Her mother Martha was 18 years old, and her father Henry Blake Watkins was 22.
