Census Sunday part 1 -- Fristus Howell before 1912

Fristus Howell 3-gen Pedigree from Ancestry.com
Below is the 1880 Federal census, with Fristus living with his parents Jethro and Laurenda Batten Howell in Boon Hill, Johnston Co. NC.   Later on, we'll explore the different name variations for his mother, but for now note it is spelled Lorinda. Their record starts at the bottom of the page, line 49.  This is a typical farming family.  Wonder what they farmed?

Jethro and Laurenda Howell census 1880 part 1

Next page lists the children of this family.  Nellie is the oldest age 18, Fristus here is written as "Pristus" and he is 6 years old.  His grandmother Sophia LNU Howell lives with them, probably because she's been a widow since 1858.  Also living with them is an 18 year old servant/laborer John Britton.  As far as I know he is unrelated.

Jethro and Laurenda Howell 1880 Census 2

They live in Boon Hill Township of  Johnston County, North Carolina.  Some names of their neighbors that I find in my corollary research are Raines, Sasser,  and Creech.  My great uncle told me once that the young men found their girls within walking distance of their home.  Because they didn't have cars, then.  They had to finish their farmwork, walk to the girls' home to visit for a while, then walk back home.  This information is valuable when looking for your ancestors.

Boon Hill Twp from Mapclick Johnston Co NC

This is the location of Boon Hill Twp as of 2017.  This information was obtained from Mapclick Johnston Co.  The link is below, and it is a fun site to play with.

There is no 1890 census due to a major fire.  Easy enough to find this information, so I won't belabour the cause.

The 1900 census is below.  He is living with his mother Laurenda, his sister Tilithia, and his nephew Millard G. Lane.  The family starts line 4.  This is a cool census because it provides the month and year each person was born.  I have to point out that Millard is NOT a Howell child.  He is listed here as Laurenda's grandson.  Research shows that Tilithia married Millard Lane, and they had at least this son.  Point of research -- find out why Millard Sr is no living with them right now.  It is too early for WWI.

Their home is still in Boone Hill Township, but also in the Lower Boon Hill Precinct, all of Johnston County NC.  Still a farming family.  Fristus is still a farmer labourer, and he cannot read nor write.

Laurenda Howell 1900 Census

His name is indexed as Faistus, but again, if you look carefully you can make out the "r" and see where it is closed at the bottom.  But you have to squint your eyes and hold your nose to the left a bit.  Well ... hmmm ... maybe not.  I checked the other "r" words like Corra and Robert and Charley.  The enumerator wrote in something like a Palmer method of handwriting, see the sample below --

Sample of Palmer Cursive
http://writeanalog.com/learning-cursive-handwriting/

So, perhaps his name really IS written down as "Faistus."  Anyway, this is the last census we will find Fristus in as a single fellow.  He marries Katie two years after this census was taken.  Neighbors include Raines, Sasser, Daughtry, all corollary names.

This family, in the 1910 census, begins on Line 31, with Cain Nawell (according to Ancestry.com).  However, if you look closely, you can see the proper spelling in the large handwriting, with the large tilted "H" and the cross-member.  The first name "Cain" is actually London King.  He went by his middle name (but of  COURSE he did, because everyone in North Carolina did).  I asked one of King's brothers why he got that name.  Uncle said it was because his parents ran out of names by that time and they wanted something BIG.

Line 38 is Fristus.  But -- his name looks like and is indexed as Cris.  MAYbe Fris.  The only way I knew this was Fristus is because of the other people in King's family.  I missed this one for years because of the horrible misspelling.

Fristus Howell 1910 Census

Fristus is a 35 year old who is farming on his own account.  I still wonder if this is where he was living when he met Katie?  I think so, it almost looks like he has a portion of farmland that is his own, but he doesn't have a house of his own yet?  This part is all imagination at this point.

I tried to find out what exactly Upper and Lower Boon Hill precincts looked like.  All I could find was a newspaper article in 1898 where they divided Boon Hill into two voting districts.  Same thing for Beulah, divided into voting districts.

Wedding Wednesday -- Fristus Haywood Howell married 1912

Fristus Haywood Howell 3-gen pedigree from Ancestry.com

Fristus Haywood Howell 1872 - 1950 was born 12 years after the War Between the States (aka Civil War) ended.  I don't have an actual birth certificate, since they weren't kept before 1913.  Instead of this primary source which doesn't exist, we will use secondary sources.  The 6 Federal Censuses in which Fristus was enumerated (under so many variations -- I'll have to list them below) all give the approximate birth year,  which we calculate subtracting the age from that particular year.  The 1900 census actually gives us a month (May) as well as the year.

Enough of this, already!  We are here to celebrate the union between two people ....

Fristus married Katie Elizabeth Watkins 22 December 1912 in Johnston North Carolina.  I don't know how they met and fell in love.  That story is always a great story to hear.  These are the only secondary sources available.  They are indexes, not the actual legal document.  It shows that somewhere these documents exist, but are not available to me online.  Below is the best that it gets.

They married in December.  Why that month, I wonder.  The first of their 13 children was born ten months later.

His mother and father had both died by this time, and most of his 10 siblings were still alive.  By the time he and Katie married, the Wright Brothers had already made their first flight at Kittyhawk North Carolina.

Names under which we find Fristus Haywood Howell are below.  I list this because we will discuss these names and why I am certain this particular spelling is my Fristus Howell (as if there are that many out there, right?)

  • Pristus H. Howell -- 1880 census
  • Foistus H. Howell -- 1900 census
  • Cris Nawell -- 1910 census
  • Friss H Howell -- 1912 marriage index
  • Frrist Howell -- 1920 census
  • Forst H. Howell -- 1930 census
  • Frist Howell -- 1940 census

Obit Sunday -- Lois Howell Vidunas 1920-1973

3 generation pedigree for Lois Howell Vidunas

I remember attending my grandmother's funeral.  I didn't know the woman well, but I clearly remember many aspects of that time.  I remember a warm day, but it didn't seem overly hot.

I was 12 or 13 years old at the time, and we stayed at Cousin Ruby's house, I believe, or with Aunt Pauline.  I remember washing my hair with bar soap for the first time, and eating fresh roasted Goobers (peanuts) for the first time.

I didn't have anything appropriate to wear, so Momma and I went shopping, bought a Navy-themed dress complete with wide white collar and navy-coloured tights.  Funny, I wonder if Shelley also had to have a new dress?  I guess my world was all about me, then.

I helped pick out the flowers to go on her casket, and at the funeral I remember how proud I was that I was able to help with something so important.  Then I felt guilty, because what sane person feels prideful at a funeral?  I also felt guilty because everyone else was crying but I didn't.  Until my Cousin started crying, and that emotion became contagious.  I cried.

Afterward, we hiked through a corn field to the Howell Family Cemetery.  On the way, Uncle Earl introduced me to the unique pleasures of eating corn on the cob -- raw -- in the field.  Just hiking along, plucking corn off the stalk, shucking it and letting the husks fall where they may, and biting into the juicy corn kernals.  Yee-haw! they tasted great.

I don't remember leaving the cemetery.  Funny how memory works.

These are my school photos about this same time.  Kind of a geeky little kid who thought she knew everything at the time.

Below is the 1973 death certificate for Lois Howell Vidunas.  As with many of her North Carolina relatives, she went by her middle name.  Her last name is entered as Gendeau, since that was her last husband.  She died 18 July 1973 at 8:30 pm of Acute Cardiac Failure. She had a heart attack caused by clogging of the arteries (Occlusive Coronary Artery Disease). Interestingly, she'd also had Pulmonary Tuberculosis. She was a widow again.

Here is her gravestone.  Again, notice her first name is Lois, because that is how her family and friends knew her.  And the last name is Vidunas, I think it is because she never really got over the death of her beloved Joseph Vidunas.

Below is the obituary.  It reads as follows:
Mrs Annie Lois Gendreau, 53, died Wednesday in East Meadow, NY.  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10am ... in Goldsboro.  Burial will be in the Howell family cemetery.
She is survived by one son, William Alfred (sic) Vidunas of Alexandria La.; three brothers, Melvin T. Howell of Springfield, Va., William R. Howell of Herndon, Va., and Henry H. Howell of Dumfries Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Earl Edwards of Goldsboro, Mrs. Harry Garris of Danville, Va., Mrs. Eddie J. Wright of Eaton-Rapids Mich., and Mrs. Nick Liberoutey of Goldsboro; three grandchildren.

  •  In this obituary, she has her full first and middle names, and her last name is Gendreau.  Legally, that is all true.
  • She was only 53 years old.  For some reason, I thought she was ancient.  It could be my childish perspective, though
  • Melvin T. Howell is known as Thadeus
  • William R. Howell is known as Roland
  • Mrs Earl Edwards is Pauline Howell Edwards
  • Mrs Harry Garris is Blanch Howell Garris
  • Mrs Eddie Wright is Alline Howell Wright
  • Mrs Nick Liberoutey is Eula Howell Liberati
  • the three grandchildren are myself and my sisters
